Email Forwarding Policy Change

We have made a policy change that affects all customers who forward their Avvanta email to outside addresses. This change only affects customers who forward their email but did not already have Advanced Spam Protection enabled.

  • If you forward your Avvanta email to an outside address and Advanced Spam Protection was already enabled then this change will not affect you in any way.
  • If you forward your Avvanta email to an outside address and Advanced Spam Protection was not enabled then ASP has been forcibly enabled at the default spam threshold settings.

Over the last few years more and more providers are blocking spam based upon the IP Address the spam email originates from. We ourselves have utilized IP Address blocking as a spam control mechanism for many years now.

Blocking spam based upon a known point-of-origin is highly effective but is not without the possibility of accidentally blocking an innocent party. Mail Forwarding is the primary cause of such an accidental block.

If an unfiltered mailbox here receives a large amount of spam and is forwarding mail then all that spam gets forwarded. The receiving mail server can't know the mail is only being forwarded... it just sees a bunch of spam coming from our mail server. Multiply this scenario by a few dozen such mailboxes all forwarding their mail to the same receiving system and it becomes only a matter of time before that receiving system blocks our mail server.

This scenario has already occurred more than once.

In an effort to prevent this from happening again we are making this policy change. From now on any email address that forwards to another address must have our Advanced Spam Protection enabled. This will greatly reduce the amount of spam that gets forwarded outside our system and in turn greatly reduce the chances that our mail server will be blocked by other mail providers.

Your Advanced Spam Protection settings can be found in the Tools menu of the CCC at http://www.avvantamail.com. We also have extensive documentation on how to take full advantage of our spam filters on our Spam Filtering Tips page.

Please contact Avvanta Support with any questions you may have regarding this change, and thank you for your continued support.
