DNS Updates, Shell Access Changes - Stage One
Posted by admin on 2008-10-13 15:42:04
As mentioned in a previous update the existing DNS and shell server (Animal) is long past due for retirement.

Unfortunately with the number of services on that machine it is no simple matter to replace, so we'll be conducting the change in stages. Stage One changes will affect shell and (to a much lesser extent) FTP access.

The 206.124.128.1 (Animal) server currently provides primary DNS, FTP, SSH, Telnet, primary NTPD, and probably a few services we've long since forgotten. The first stage of the server's retirement party is in progress and specifically targets SSH, Telnet, and FTP.

Telnet / SSH Changes

As of today, October 13th, Telnet access to the shell server is no longer available. This particular change was long overdue.

SSH users should begin using the new server name and IP address:

shell.avvanta.com - 206.124.128.10

You can also use shell.blarg.net if you prefer. The current names for shell access (animal.blarg.net/206.124.128.1) will continue to work until Stage Two is implemented later this month. After Stage Two you will no longer be able to SSH to animal.blarg.net or the IP 206.124.128.1. Please begin using the new name and IP now to prevent avoidable problems in the future.

FTP Changes

FTP access is not currently affected by Stage One, but it too has some new server names to use. Authenticated FTP access uses the name userftp.avvanta.com (or userftp.blarg.net)

A new server name pointing to the new IP address is now available:

upload.avvanta.com - 206.124.128.10

As with all things, the blarg.net version of the name works as well. An alias uploads.avvanta.com has also been created that points to the same location. In Stage Two we will be changing the existing name (userftp) to point to this new IP address as well. (Translation to all of the above: FTP access to 206.124.128.1 will no longer be possible)

Stage 2
Stage Two will be when we finalize the swap of IP addresses and services between old server and new server. This should happen near the end of October. Scheduling is still up in the air as we've already encountered unforeseen issues regarding this task and, Murphy being who he is, we fully expect to hit more.
