DNS Updates, Shell Access Changes

Since the emergence of the Kaminsky DNS flaws we have been taking steps to update our BIND DNS servers to prevent the flaw from affecting our systems and customers. The last of those changes was made live Tuesday, July 29. Due to an oversight some customers were unable to resolve hostnames last night and early this morning. That has been corrected. More changes are on the way.

As a reminder, the nameservers are:

  NS1.AVVANTA.COM (animal.blarg.net) 206.124.128.1
NS2.AVVANTA.COM (guysmiley.blarg.net) 206.124.128.3

The old name server on 199.245.214.80 has been retired. That name server has not been assigned via DHCP or PPP for several years however some may have hard-coded that server's IP into their configurations - and if so should reconfigure to use the above servers instead.

Shell Users Notice: Upcoming changes to Animal
Both Animal and Guysmiley have been in service on the network since (at least) late 2000 and were due for retirement. The server running DNS on Guysmiley has already been completely replaced.

Animal will be replaced in the very near future. This machine functions as our legacy shell server, public FTP server, Network Time master server and a multitude of less-used but no less critical services. As such the replacement of this machine will be a more involved task and will be completed within the next few weeks. In the meantime Animal's DNS has been configured to forward through Guysmiley, so although Animal is still running older BIND it is actually the new (patched) server that handles the query.

This change will affect all shell (SSH) users.

The new server will take over the animal.blarg.net name and IP address as well as all the services (DNS, FTP etc) while the shell service will remain on its existing hardware using a new name and new IP.

  shell.blarg.net 206.124.128.10 (Not yet functional)

Once this change goes live shell access will only be available using the new name and IP.

We will post a new notice prior to making this change live. If you have any questions, please email Avvanta Support and let us know.

Thank you.
