Registrar "slamming" is a term used to describe the fraudulent act of convincing the owner of a domain name to "renew" their domain registration. While the act of renewal itself is not fraudulent, the perpetrators do not adequately disclose the fact that the "renewal" is actually a Registrar Transfer. If you are the owner of a domain name be aware of the following tactics which may be used to trick you.
- A postal mailing that looks like an invoice or bill with dire warnings urging immediate renewal to avoid losing ownership of your domain. Often the "invoice" or "bill" is made out to appear similar to something that might come from a government agency.
- A mailing as above for a sound-alike domain name, or domain with an alternate extension such as .us or .biz.
- An unsolicited fax containing much of the above information. A fax being more immediate this type of solicitation will imply that your domain is set to expire within 24 to 48 hours. (Even when the domain's actual expiration may be months, or even years away)
- Telemarketing calls of the same nature, often asking for the domain owner's fax or current mailing information so they can attempt one of the other methods noted here.
If you own a domain name you should be aware of the many predatory tactics employed by these companies. The most notorious of them being Domain Registry of America (aka "Domain Registry Support" and a slew of other aliases) This company has recently increased the frequency and aggressiveness of their attempts to convince domain owners to "renew" domains with them.If you own a domain name and receive any kind of domain related notification or solicitation that you are in any way unsure of please call our office.
