VoIP Frequently Asked Questions
I want multiple phones, multiple lines, auto attendants and other business class features. Do you offer them?
Yes! We are offering our commercial grade VoIP service under our Fonexus brand name. The service provides all required hardware and professional on-site installation and training. See our Fonexus web site for details!

Do I need Avvanta's broadband service to use Avvanta's VoIP?
No! You can use our VoIP on virtually any broadband internet connection. The VoIP service only needs around 80Kbps of bandwidth to perform well. Please note that some broadband services (notably some wireless providers and wifi hotspots) actively block VoIP packets, so the service may not work on every broadband connection. If in doubt please call our office.

Do I still need to keep my regular telephone line to use VoIP?
Yes and No. You do not need a telephone line to use VoIP, but if your DSL piggybacks in on your existing phone line then you may want to keep that line just to avoid having to make any changes. Both Qwest and Verizon offer "standalone" DSL - a DSL line with no underlying voice service. You can switch to a Standalone line and drop your existing voice phone service but doing so can be problematic or might require downtime on your DSL to complete. Please call our office to discuss your options in this matter before deciding how to proceed.

Do I have to use my computer to make VoIP Calls?
No, you do not have to use a softphone. Softphones allow you to make and receive calls using your computer, or you can use an ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter). The ATA connects your regular telephone to the VoIP network allowing you to make and receive calls on your VoIP line using the phone you already own.

Can I use an IP Phone?
Certainly. If you own an IP Phone and it supports SIP the phone should work with our service.

Can I have more than one VoIP phone line or number?
Yes, each additional line would require its own ATA or softphone and a separate vVoice account.

Will my fax machine work on a VoIP line?
Yes, the majority of fax machines will work over a VoIP line through an ATA.

Do you offer international calling plans?
We will. Our international calling plans should be available in early May - please check our web site for updates.

Are there any taxes or surcharges on a VoIP line?
Yes. The FCC has mandated that we charge the $2.00 Universal Service Fee on each VoIP line.

Can you port my existing phone number to a VoIP number?
Yes, although the process takes slightly longer than it would with a normal cellular or LEC carrier. (5 to 14 working days to port most numbers)

Does 911 work on a VoIP line?
Yes, we will register your location with E-911 when your VoIP service is setup. In addition some ATAs support emergency fail-over to a regular POTs line if your VoIP or broadband isn't working. (The Grandstream 386 ATA supports this feature)

Can my alarm system use the VoIP line?
Technically yes, however we strongly discourage this. Use a regular POTS line for your alarm system's reporting functions.
