ActionTec GT701 Setup Guide - SOHOxs Accounts

This is a Setup Guide, not a general ActionTec Modem Support Page. If you need technical assistance with your ActionTec modem and are not an Avvanta customer please contact ActionTec Technical Support.

Included with your ActionTec GT701-WG was a CD-ROM labeled "Put this CD-ROM in FIRST". You should NOT use this CD-ROM to configure your ActionTec router. It is not needed and the software is not compatible with Avvanta's SOHOxs Service.

Gather required information
Before you begin configuring your ActionTec GT701-WG for your Avvanta SOHOxs DSL service, you will need to make sure that you have your SOHOxs IP Assignment. Shortly after your account was setup, you were emailed your SOHOxs IP Assignment from Avvanta's support staff. You will need the information contained in this email to setup the ActionTec.

The ActionTec GT701-WG has two methods for connecting your computer, a single Ethernet or LAN port, and a USB port. Avvanta does not support SOHOxs connections over USB. If you do not have an Ethernet connection on your computer, you will need to purchase one and install it in your computer before proceeding. During the configuration, you should connect your computer directly into the ActionTec GT701-WG's Ethernet port. It should not be connected through any other routers, switches or hubs. After configuring the ActionTec GT701-WG you may then reconnect any additional devices.

Physical Installation
  • Plug in the power supply and connect the power cable to the DSL router. The Power LED should begin blinking for 10 to 30 seconds and then be steady green. The DSL LED should then start blinking.
  • The phone cord included with your router is your DSL cable, this is the cable that should be used to connect your router to the phone jack. Plug one end into the DSL port on the back of the Router and the other end directly into your phone jack on the wall. Run the line directly from the wall to the router, the line should not be plugged into anything other than the router and the wall. Splitters, answering machines, surge protectors, fax machines, etc., may interfere with the operation of your DSL line. After connecting the DSL cable, the DSL LED on the front of the router should stop blinking and go solid after 10 to 20 seconds. If the DSL LED does not stop blinking, verify that you have properly connected the telephone line to the router and the wall. If the DSL LED does not stop flashing, and it is past your Qwest activation date, you should call Qwest Technical Support at 1-800-218-4443 to verify that your line has been activated.

Connecting to the Ethernet port
  • Plug one end of the provided yellow ethernet cable into the port labeled Ethernet. With your computer powered on, plug the other end into your computer's ethernet adapter. The Ethernet LED on your router should be steady and green. This light may begin blinking shortly after the connection is made and is normal.

Verify Connectivity
  • Make sure that the Power LED is lit and green on the router. If the Power does not come on and remain lit, verify that you have correctly connected the power cord to the router. If the light does not remain lit, or continues flashing call our office at 425.818.6500 pr 888.662.5274.
  • The Ethernet LED should be lit and green and possibly flickering occasionally. This indicates a connection to your computer. If the indicator light does not come on double check the connection between your computer and the router. If after verifying the connection between the computer and router you are still unable to obtain an Ethernet Network connection, call our office for assistance.
  • Make sure the DSL LED is lit and steady. If the DSL LED is not lit, or if it is blinking steadily, double check the telephone line connection between the router and the wall. If the DSL light does not stay a steady green color, the router is not receiving a DSL signal from your phone line. Call Qwest Technical Support at 1-800-218-4443 to verify that your line has been activated.

Configure your Computer
Due to the way the ActionTec GT701-WG handles IP addresses and routing, this section will need to be done twice. During the Configure the Router steps, the router will need to be restarted and these configuration steps will need to be performed a second time. The second time through the configuration, your computer should get an IP address from the Usable range of IP addresses listed in your SOHOxs Assignment email.

Windows 95/98/Me TCP/IP Configuration
  • Click on Start then click on Run. In the dialog box, type in winipcfg then click OK.
  • From the "Windows IP Configuration" window, select your Ethernet Adapter from the pull down list.
  • Click on the Release All button.
  • Click on the Renew All button.
    • The first time this is done, your computer should show an IP address of 192.168.0.x, where x is a number between 2 and 254, your computer is correctly communicating with the router.
    • After configuring the LAN IP Address and rebooting the ActionTec from the Configure the Router section, your computer should show an IP address from the Usable range of IP addresses contained in your SOHOxs Assignment email.
  • If you receive an error or any other IP address is displayed, verify your ethernet connection following the Verify Connectivity section and try the command again. If you are unable to obtain an IP address, please call our office for assistance.
  • Close the "Windows IP Configuration" window by clicking OK.

Windows 2000/XP TCP/IP Configuration
  • Click on Start then click on Run.
  • In the dialog box, type in cmd then click OK to start a command prompt.
  • From the command prompt type ipconfig /renew and press Enter.
    • The first time this is done, your computer should show an IP address of 192.168.0.x, where x is a number between 2 and 254, your computer is correctly communicating with the router.

In the "Password" box, enter the password you selected when you created your Avvanta account. Leave the "Static IP box" blank, your IP address will be assigned automatically when your router connects. Click on the Next button to bring up the "Wireless Settings" page.
  • From the "Wireless Settings" page, make sure that Wireless is set to Off. If you wish to configure your ActionTec GT701-WG for wireless networking, please see our Support section for additional setup information. Click on Next to bring up the "LAN IP Address" page.
  • From the "LAN IP Address" page enter the Gateway / Router Address in the Device IP Address box. Your SOHOxs IP information would have been emailed to your Avvanta email address shortly after your account was created. If you do not have this information, please call our office for assistance. In the Device LAN Netmask box, enter the Netmask from the SOHOxs Assignment email. After entering those values, click Next.
  • At this point, the ActionTec will inform you that you will need to save and restart for the settings to take effect. Click OK to close the message window and accept the notice, then click Save and Restart. The modem will save its settings and reboot.
    • Once the Power LED stops blinking on the modem, return to the Configure your Computer section and repeat all of the steps leading up to this one.

Click Next to proceed to the "Save and Restart" page.
  • From the "Save and Restart" page, click on the Save and Restart button to save the configuration and reboot the ActionTec. Wait for the Power LED to stop blinking before proceeding to the next step.
  • In the Address or Location bar of your web browser, clear any address that may be present.
  • Enter the Gateway / Router Address from the SOHOxs IP Assignment email in your browser and press Enter.
  • In the browser window the "ActionTec menu" should appear. Click on the "Setup / Configuration" option.
  • From the "Set Up / Configuration" menu, click on Admin Username / Password item to bring up the "Change Admin Password" page.
  • On the "Change Admin Username / Password" page, select a new password that you have never used before. Once you have selected a new password, enter it in both the New Password and Re-enter New Password boxes. For additional security, you may also change the default username from "admin" to something of your choosing. Click on the Save and Restart button to store your new password and reboot the router. It is important that you set this password to keep other Internet users from accessing your router. The username and password should be written down and taped to the underside of the router to ensure that it is not lost or forgotten.
  • Once the Power LED stops blinking your ActionTec GT701-WG should be ready to use.
  • During normal operation of the ActionTec, the Power and DSL LEDs should both be on and steady. The Internet LED will be on and green once you have connected and authenticated with the Avvanta network. The Internet LED will blink when data is being sent over your DSL connection. If the Internet LED blinks or stays red, then your DSL modem is not able to authenticate with the Avvanta network. You should verify your password and re-enter it in the "Advanced Configuration" section of the ActionTec. If you are unable to authenticate, please call our office for assistance.
